Desert Oasis Software Co. Features

Reprint from 'The Soil-Plant Analysis' Winter 2000

Have you been left in the dust by the new technology revolution? Today's business world has undergone a metamorphosis due to continuous technological advancement, where individual companies and entire industries have been transformed by the development and use of computers and application specific software. Have you ever wondered why the technology revolution has not presented you with new tools to manage lab operations? When will someone develop a solution to classic data capture and storage problems and enhance efficiencies and the cost effectiveness of your lab? When will your computer live up to its promise and when will you be able to have a life during the farming season?
Desert Oasis Software Company is proud to announce the unveiling of the Agri-Labs Information System, (ALIS). ALIS is an innovative new software package specifically designed for the agricultural testing industry. Whether the testing be performed on soils, plant tissue, manures, water or feeds, this automated system will track the samples, record results, make recommendations, send the results and recommendations to the customer via fax, email or print, then bill the customer and export the billing information to your accounting system with amazing automation and ease.
From its inception, the requirements and workings of an operating analytical lab were the driving forces behind the planning, design and development of ALIS. Desert Oasis rejected the philosophy of taking an existing database and trying to make it fit, but rather started from scratch and wrote the ultimate program that is not limited by a design meant for another application. Throughout the project we had ongoing communication with soil and plant tissue testing labs in order to help us understand their work and expectations. These labs helped test the functionality and user-friendliness of the software as it was developed.
ALIS is organized into six modules: 1) soils, 2) soil grids, 3) plant tissues, 4) waters, 5) feeds, and 6) manures. ALIS tracks samples through the testing process, records and stores results for retrieval, analysis and reporting of data. This agricultural specific LIMS provides the laboratory owner/operator with a management tool that allows greater control, more throughput, and personalized reporting, which makes the laboratory a more valuable resource for its clientele.
You may be concerned with the amount of time required by your current system to input sample data, match testing and result information, analyze the test results, develop recommendations, generate reports, and delivery to the customer the information he wants, in a format he can understand, all in a timely manner. ALIS offers a fluid process through which sample information is input, stored and manipulated. It eliminates the need to key inputs each time they are moved into another process. For example, once a sample is logged into ALIS it is stored in the database and awaits the addition of more information as the sample flows through the lab process. As tests are performed and the results are available they can be automatically added to the sample. The sample is tied to a customer, whose reporting preferences are stored in ALIS, so once the results are achieved, and approved the report is automatically sent whichever method desired by the customer. Additionally, upon dissemination of the results, the sample is invoiced and accounting information is prepared for exportation into the accounting system, without additional input requirements.
Complete information automation is available with ALIS. If the lab's testing equipment is outfitted with the proper output devices, it can be attached to your computer and ALIS will accept the automatic reporting of test results, and that information will subsequently flow through the program. ALIS supports multiple levels of automation, depending upon its setup. The combined timesavings of initial data input and accounting can be significant. How many evenings and nights have you spent retrieving reports manually and sending them to your clients, wishing the process were automated so you could be enjoying summer evenings? With ALIS you will no longer have an excuse for having no life.
Once created, reports are always available on-line for easy retrieval. When a client calls and starts asking questions, you can quickly be looking at the same report, either on-screen or printed. If necessary, reprinting the reports is quick and easy. No more fumbling through file cabinets or boxes to find a copy of last year's results.
ALIS is tremendous tool for research and analysis. If you analyze and research the geographic areas where your clients are located, you'll like ALIS' Query-By-Example routines. You define the information to be retrieved in a simple interactive process, and ALIS finds the matching records for you. This allows, for example, all samples that came from an area defined by a high and low latitude limit and a high and low longitude limit to be fetched, regardless of account number. You could fetch all invoices where more than 50 pounds of N per acre was needed, etc.
On top of the query functions ALIS also allows you to export a query in formats that allow the information to be combined and/or manipulated by other commercial software products. When you combine the database of detailed test results for a given field, retrieved through the query and export abilities of ALIS, with quality production information maintained by the grower you have a complete set of information upon which he can base future decisions. Imagine the confidence you would feel basing recommendations on absolute historical information, rather than your client's recollections. Imagine the loyalty, confidence and dependence this information will help you earn from your client base.
ALIS comes ready to serve your office either on a standalone workstation or in a networked environment. This allows you to start small, and as your lab grows and you need to allow more people access, ALIS easily accommodates your needs. No special commands are required, and record protection is automatic. ALIS was designed to operate equally well under Windows NT networking, Novell Netware, or even peer-to-peer.
A few comments from labs who have reviewed or used ALIS:
"In reviewing it I think that you folks have put together a super program."
"I was surprised to find a LIMS fill our need so completely."
"You have a real winner in ALIS."
